What type of chaps do I want?
Batwing Chap - is a full length
pleasure or work chap which normally secures to the upper leg with buckles
and straps. It is an "open" design which allows air circulation. This chap
offers full length protection from trees, brush and other elements.
Chink Chap
- is a 3/4 length pleasure or work chap which normally secures the the
upper leg with buckles & straps. It is an "open" design which allows the
best circulation of air. It is the most versatile chap and offers good
upper leg protection from trees, brush and other elements while offering
less restriction to movement.
Cutting Chap
- is a full length chap which normally secures to the upper leg with
buckles & straps. It is very similar to a batwing chap except that it has
a "dropped heal" which is designed to the rider's boot heel & spur. This
allows the rider to "cue" the horse with spur or heel movements without
those "cues" being seen by spectators or judges.
Rodeo Chap
- is a standard item in the "roughtstock" events of rodeo. It is a
specially cut batwing chap that is designed to "flap" to accentuate the
movements of the rider & make the riders movements look more dramatic to
the spectators & judges.
Shotgun Chap
- is a full length pleasure or work chap with a zipper closure. It offers
the most protection from the elements but is also the most restrictive and
has the least air circulation because of it's "closed leg" design.
Show Chap
- The "Show Chap" or "Equestrian Chap" is a full length pleasure or work
chap with a zipper closure. It is very similar to the shotgun chap
with the exception that it is made with a "dropped heel" like the cutting
chap to conceal the spurs & heel.
Schooling
Chap - is a full length chap used for English style riding. It is
basically a shotgun chap that is normally tapered more tighter fitting
than a western style shotgun chap.
Motorcycle
Chap - is a full length chap with a zipper closure & snaps at the base
of the leg. It is basically a biker style version of a shotgun chap with
the exception of the snaps. The snaps keep the zipper from un-zipping that
is caused by the base of the chap leg "flapping in the wind" during
riding.
Leather Types
Basic & Deluxe Leather - we separate our
leather into two categories, the difference is mainly cost & color choice.
The quality of both types of leather is in the same range, with the
exception that the "deluxe" leather is softer than the average
"basic" leather.
Basic Leather - is currently leather that we buy in larger bulk at
a lower price level. The leather that is currently available in the market
is what we have to choose from and the colors & textures are almost never
the same. This limits our choices but provides the customer with a good
quality but lower priced leather. This is why "Basic Chaps" are available
in what we call "Earthtone" colors. When buying chaps that are made of
this leather the customer has only a choice of the leather that is
currently in stock and will not have standard colors to choose from.
Deluxe Leather - is leather that we offer in some standard ranges
of color and is a little more expensive and is usually a more pliable and
softer leather than the average "basic leather". It is generally available
in rust, chocolate, black & white. The shades of color will vary from
batch to batch, so the leather may not be the exact color shown in our
pictures. If we offer "rust", the customer should expect some
difference in shades of color. If a customer is wanting a very specific
shade of a color, they should contact us to see if it is available
however, it is usually nearly impossible to match an exact color.
Even leather that is tanned by the same process by the same tannery will
vary in shade from batch to batch. Some of our leather such as the
"Buckskin" color is only available if it is specially tanned for us. This
leather is considered "Deluxe Leather" but is more expensive because it is
custom tanned for our use.
Basic Chaps
Basic Chaps - We seperate our price list into two main categories
called "Basic Chaps" and "Deluxe Chaps". Basic chaps are fully
functional chaps that leave out the fancy options. They are our base model
to which other options can be added at additional cost.
They come with the following standard specifications: Leather - chap body
is typically 5-6 oz. top grain "basic leather". Top yoke - 5-6 oz. top
grain chap leather. Side yoke - two slotted stamped steel conchos w/

latigo leather front straps w/ #121 buckle. Back Belt - adjustable 1.5"
doubled & stitched chap leather laced on in V-braid style. Leg Straps -
"only applicable to buckle leg chaps" 5-6 oz. chap leather straps, 2 per
leg with roller buckles. Fringe - 6" standard fringe on chinks, 8"
standard fringe on "basic" chow chaps & "basic" rodeo chaps, Fringe is not
standard on other chap styles. Thread - white nylon, black is available
upon request. Zippers - applies only to zipper leg chaps, 3/4" heavy duty
brass zipper.

fastening legs come with 3 buckles & latigo leg straps, plus a side yoke.

Chap Measurements
Measurements are extremely
important for custom sized chap orders. Please pay close attention to the
instructions and don't assume any measurements.
Buckle Leg Chaps - ie. batwings chaps, cutting chaps, chinks &
rodeo chaps. Take your measurements while wearing the clothing that you
normally wear with the chaps. It is probably best to have another person
take the measurements. Use a soft measuring tape, they are available at
most fabric stores or drugstores. Pull the tape so that it is comfortable
on your leg not too tight and not to loose.
Zipper Leg Chaps - ie. shotgun chaps, show chaps, motorcycle chaps &
schooling chaps. Take your measurements while wearing the clothing that
you normally wear with the chaps. It is probably best to have another
person take the measurements. Use a soft measuring tape, they are
available at most fabric stores or drugstores. Pull the tape so that it is
comfortable on your leg not too tight and not to loose.
The zipper leg chaps are not adjustable in the leg like the buckle leg
chaps. You may want to leave some room for long underwear, extra clothing
or for possible weight gain. You may also have a preference for a tighter
or loose fitting leg. Since we do not want to guess at how you want your
chap to fit, we request that you tell us exact measurements that you
prefer. If you take a tight measurement, the chaps will be difficult to
zip because we will make them to the exact measurements provided. To
provide us with the correct lwg measurement on all zipper leg chaps,
we suggest that you leave the tape as loose as you want the chaps to
fit & provide us with that measurement.
